Air variance petitions files of GASP (Group Against Smog and Pollution), 1971-1976.

The collection contains correspondence, legal materials, and other documents relating to air pollution variance petitions filed between 1971-1976. The folders are organized alphabetically according to the organization responsible for filing the petition. In addition to the written documents, the collection contains: the P & I diagram and legend and reactor effluent study data for the Springdale Production facility (PPG Industries), the Sinter line Carrie blast furnace flow diagram (US Steel: Sinter Plant, Homestead Works), a diagram of the additional gas cleaning facilities for the sintering line at the Edgar Thomson plant (E.T. Irvin Works), a schematic plan for the no. 3 boiler, tar burners, tar and steam piping, and combination air duct work for the S.S. Central Boiler Plant (J & L), the construction schedule for the Allegheny Power Service Corporation Springdale Power Station, boiler no. 88, and the plan and section of the no. 3 boiler, burner detail, and the plan of material. The flat file contains three copies of the "Dirty Gertie Award", two blank, and one given to US Steel for its "contribution to air pollution in Allegheny County."

GASP (Group Against Smog and Pollution) was founded as a non-profit citizens' group in 1969 by a group of 43 volunteers in southwestern Pennsylvania working for a "healthy, sustainable environment". Over the years the group has worked to improve environmental standards in the region through educational programs and a quarterly newsletter, Hotline. In the 1970s, GASP entered into litigation in Federal District Court to require Allegheny County to adopt standards based on the Clean Air Act of 1970...
